Business is Complex - what now?

Remember when you started your business? You had no idea it would be as complex and hard as it has been. OK, I generalize but I know I’m not alone in my experience.

So now the elephant is not longer hidden let’s talk about how business is getting more complex and pivot is no longer a word anyone wants to use (post covid).

I won’t use the word pivot. I’ll use two words instead. These are ‘continuous improvement’. It’s like a pivot but implies that you can stay on the same track and make small incremental changes. Unless you do a lean blitz which is like a massive pivot. Think working all weekend to improvement something.

I will add a few more concepts to help with complexity management. I like the idea of ‘extracting simplicity’. This means taking the important bits out of the muddle so you have a good process. I have talked about systems in my previous blog ‘Systems Matter’. Only retaining the important things (value) in a process gives us the state of flow and flow feels effortless.

Back to the feeling of complexity, where we can’t get anywhere as we have to think constantly or see obstacles everywhere. We need to transcend this problem. This is where upskilling in capability comes from. This might look like hiring a contractor for work they could do better than you, while you use your capability in other areas. This is also capability.

This is a short post. We identified that business was complex. I used the terms pivot and continuous improvement. Leant about flow, extracting simplicity and ended with capability.

These posts are a bit of fun to bring in concepts that are broad and very, very useful.

I use all of these concepts in my work and find the best fit with clients who also want to make business have more flow amid the complexity that is our modern business environment.
